Exploration
This study investigated the overlap between design and biotechnology, using living organisms as a functional element in product design. It focused on Flavobacteria: microorganisms that generate structural colours, which change in response to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and surface texture. A potential application is the development of living indicators, stickers or labels containing these bacteria, that could be placed on fruit boxes during transport to visually indicate whether suitable conditions have been maintained. The study involved hands-on lab work to explore new material possibilities, covering both fundamental biological techniques and the environmental factors influencing bacterial behaviour.
