Bio Design

Exploration

This project bridges design and biotechnology, beginning with hands-on training in biological lab practices and experiments with living materials. Through workshops in fermentation and microbial cultivation, designing with Flavobacteria was introduced—microorganisms able to produce structural colors that change under varying environmental conditions.

By experimenting how these bacteria respond to factors such as temperature, humidity, and surface texture, the project explored the potential of creating living signs or responsive labels—biological indicators that could, for instance, show whether fruits have been exposed to unsuitable conditions during transport. The study reflects on how designers can incorporate living systems in their products, introducing new material qualities and possibilities
