Exploration
This exploration investigates the theory of light and its properties, such as intensity, colour, and distribution, through a case study that redesigns the lighting experience of Rotterdam’s Coolhaven metro station to enhance the perception of safety.
Working as part of a design team, we analysed the station’s existing lighting environment and proposed a revised fixture plan built around a dynamic lighting concept. This aims to improve spatial awareness and reassurance through three key principles: prospect, offering a clear overview of the environment; concealment, reducing the sense of hidden areas; and surveillance, enhancing the feeling of being part of a shared, observable space.
The resulting concept demonstrates how light can transform an environment without altering its physical structure, by reshaping the way it is perceived.

How does it work?
Digital, abstract agents mirror the presence of travellers on the platform. As someone enters the space, a soft blob form emerges from a lava lamp–like structure to represent them. These forms respond to movement and interact with the environment and one another, creating a subtle visual dialogue across the station walls. Through this shared awareness, travellers become more conscious of each other’s presence, fostering a sense of connection and reassurance within the space.
