Bio Design

Exploration

This study investigated the overlap of design and biotechnology, integrating nature as an element in product design. It focused on Flavobacteria: microorganisms that generate structural colours which change in response to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and surface texture. A potential application is the development of living indicators—stickers or labels containing these bacteria—that could be placed on fruit boxes during transport to visually indicate whether suitable conditions were maintained. The study involved hands-on experimentation in the lab with both fundamental biological techniques, as well as the environmental factors influencing bacterial behaviour, exploring new material possibilities.
